Reedham is probably the prettiest riverside village on the Wherry or Bittern Lines. Reedham is situated on the river Yare in Norfolk between Norwich, Great Yarmouth (via Berney Arms) and Lowestoft. Reedham is a medium sized village with an active post office, shop, fish and chip shop, two cafes and three thriving pubs as well as other attractions including Pettitts Animal Adventure Park and Humpty Dumpty brewery. River cruisers can be hired from Sanderson Marine and river trips may be made on "The Southern Belle” toward Great Yarmouth or Cantley during the summer months. The village is strategically placed on the Wherryman’s Way long distance trail which stretches from Norwich to Great Yarmouth. For the slightly less energetic there are numerous short walks and the surrounding area is ideal for cycling.
A short walk from the station down ferry road takes you to the Ferry Inn which is at the extreme end of the village. The Wherryman’s Way crosses the river here by means of the last operating chain ferry on the Broads. Suitably refreshed and retracing your steps to the station, the Garage Café presents itself which is open daily during the season for breakfast, light lunch and afternoon tea. From here, the village river frontage is about 1 kilometer along Station Road and right at the War Memorial. Sanderson Marine is on the right and on the left is Cup Cakes Café, the Post Office and Gift shop and the Lord Nelson public house. At the end of the quay and next to the railway swing bridge, is The Ship Inn public house which has a riverside garden. At the top of the hill from The Ship Inn is a cross road. On the left is the Hills where the village shop, fish and chip shop, surgery and Reedham Vikings Social club are located. Right from the cross road takes you either by road or footpath to John the Baptist parish church. Reedham church is one of the oldest recorded religious establishments in Norfolk.
Records show that a church has stood on this site since the 7th century and part of the north wall is exposed and is thought to be constructed from a Roman lighthouse which was later probably used as Dane Law tower. A leaflet describing the history of the church is available for a small charge from inside the church. Opposite the church is Pettitts Animal Adventure Park and Humpty Dumpty brewery. Please check both sites for opening times.
A left turn past these establishments is Church Road which leads via Pottles Lane to the entrance to the Village Hall. Reedham is fortunate in having such a well appointed meeting hall which incorporates a hall, kitchen, lounge and bar. There is a children’s play area, tennis court and football pitch. There are occasional stage productions as well as village social events all of which are extremely popular. From here, Reedham station is a 15 minute walk from here. Walking and cycling leaflets are available daily in the summer at the village hall and at weekends during the winter (subject to weather). Please visit www.reedham.info for more details on attractions and events.
